Health is a huge part of family life. Can we truly say we are caring for our family if we are lavishing them in unhealthiness? It's a good question.

One huge part of health is sleep. If you as a parent, or your child isn't getting enough sleep – it could be worse than some of the unhealthiest habits on the planet.

Not only is sleep relaxing and nice – it plays a critical role for our brains. A lack of sleep actually hurts our brains and its processes. It can damage our ability to pay attention, our ability to concentrate and be alert. For us, that could mean a bad day at the office, but it could affect your child's ability to learn. Sleep cycles help restore and repair memories in the mind – so if you don't get enough sleep, you could damage your memories, and you may not be able to remember what you learned in the day before you slept.

People and kids who suffer from sleep deprivation are prone to poor judgment – especially about their lack of sleep. There is now a focus on sleeping as little as possible as society drives towards being more efficient at all times. If you think you're ok with a lack of sleep, you are definitely wrong.

It's not just that, though – a lack of sleep can lead to some serious health issues. Heart disease and stroke are linked to sleep deprivation. It's important that you and your family find the time to get some shut-eye.

So, what can sleep do for us? Well, it can increase our memory skills which can help us learn – especially important for the younger ones in the family as they go to school each day. Dr. Rapoport of the NYU Medical Center had this to say:

"If you are trying to learn something, whether it’s physical or mental, you learn it to a certain point with practice, but something happens while you sleep that makes you learn it better."

Not only that, but researchers at two leading universities found that people strengthen the emotional parts of memory during sleep – this directly helps you become more creative!

But how can one improve their sleep? As a parent, you'll have to take charge of the sleeping habits of your children.

A good bed is going to help you and your family sleep as well! If you're currently sleeping on a bumpy mattress and bedframe check out some Serene Furnishings beds for your family.

Young children are fond of screens – computers, televisions, etc. This is known as blue light and can harm sleeping patterns. There's a lot of science behind it, but trust us – don't let your kids stare at screens before bed time. There are a lot of filters on mobile phones and tablets that can curb the effects of blue light, so use these!

Finally, a good sleep routine will help your kids. Get them into bed on a consistent time each day and help improve the sleeping health of your family!
